Police are searching for the suspect who brutally attacked a woman at her Long Beach apartment complex.
Long Beach police say the 54-year-old victim was found feet away from her front door, in the courtyard of her complex on New York Avenue.
Neighbors cried out for help after the victim was found unresponsive around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Police say she suffered blunt head trauma and was hospitalized in "very serious condition."
According to a neighbor, a witness on the boardwalk heard the woman's screams and then chased the suspect down the block.
Police used a helicopter and K-9 unit to try to track down the suspect, but he was not located. However, the Long Beach police commissioner says detectives have several leads, and they believe the woman knew her attacker.
"We have no reason to believe that this suspect would come back to hurt anyone in the community, we feel this was definitely a targeted attack," says Commissioner Michael Tangney. "We do believe that an arrest will be made sometime in the near future."
Police are not commenting on a motive for the attack at this time.
The victim has undergone several surgeries and remains in critical condition.
