Wiretaps played at the federal corruption trial of former state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and his son Adam are turning heads beyond the courtroom.
After hearing the tapes, some are now questioning Nassau Executive Ed Mangano and the county's process for doling out lucrative contracts.
Prosecutors say Adam Skelos bragged to his boss at AbTech industries in 2014 that he could dictate to the county how it would spend its money. AbTech industries had already received a $12 million contract from Nassau, and Adam allegedly promised his boss that there would be more where that came from.
"The last time I talked to the county exec, it sounded like everything was going through, and he had given me his word that he was going to find funding for...the remainder of the project," says Adam on the wiretap.
Democratic legislators are renewing their call for legislation that would take the contracting process out of the county executive's hands.
"They basically need an office that handles procurement for contracts. They have to be completely bipartisan and removed from all politics," says Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D - Glen Cove).
News 12 Long Island made multiple attempts to contact Mangano's office for comment on this story. They did not call back.
