Air travelers are bracing for major disruptions as a powerful winter storm threatens the Tri-state area and much of the country.
The system is expected to bring snow and ice from Texas to the Northeast, affecting several cities that serve as major airline hubs. Aviation experts warn that the widespread nature of the storm could trigger a domino effect of flight delays and cancellations nationwide.
Airport officials say disruptions are unavoidable. Rob Schneider, commissioner of Long Island MacArthur Airport, said the storm’s broad reach makes it especially challenging for airlines to maintain normal operations.
“We expect major disruptions to operations as a result of this storm. It’s inevitable,” Schneider said. “It’s going to hit multiple parts of the country, not just isolated here. It’s going to affect operations everywhere.”
Several major airlines are already taking action. Delta, United, American Airlines and JetBlue have announced they are waiving change fees for passengers scheduled to fly during the storm. Southwest Airlines, which does not charge change fees, has issued a travel advisory warning customers that flights may be impacted.
Travel agents are urging passengers to act quickly if they anticipate needing to rebook.
“Don’t wait. Make your changes now,” said Matthew Kondrup, of Matty K Travel Group. “You’re up against other people who are trying to find seats on that plane that might have 200 seats on it.”
Passengers are also reminded to monitor their flight status closely before heading to the airport and to allow extra time for check-in and security, as staffing and operational challenges could add to delays.
