Residents of Howard Drive in Westbury say they’ve had enough of the crevices that have plagued their block for years, and they’re calling on the Town of Hempstead to take immediate action.
On a typical spring day, the street comes alive with children riding scooters and playing in the neighborhood. But parents say the crumbling pavement puts their kids at risk.
“When the kids try to cross the road, they could trip in the potholes,” said Julia Mauceli.
The condition of the road isn’t just a hazard for pedestrians. Drivers on the block say their vehicles have suffered damage due to the uneven pavement.
“We’ve had blown out tires,” said Carmela Roma, who has lived on the street for nearly three decades. “I got a cracked rim on my car one time. Last week, they came and did this crappy little patch job. They didn’t even seal it, so now we have gravel running all over the place.”
A Town of Hempstead spokesperson says the town maintains over 1,200 miles of roadway and plans to repave more than 100 miles this year. But residents of Howard Drive feel their block has been left behind.
“I feel like we pay so much money, they should be able to pave a short block like this and do it the right way instead of patching it constantly,” said Mauceli.
Roma echoed the frustration.
“I’ve lived on this street for over 28 years, and not once has this street been redone,” she said.

The town says repairs on that portion are scheduled for the coming weeks.
