The Village of Westbury and North Hempstead have formed a partnership to crack down on so-called "illegal homes" in their neighborhoods.

Homeowners who spoke with News 12 say it's time for officials to clean up neighborhoods where single-family homes are being divided into separate apartments.

Westbury Mayor Peter Cavallaro says the best way for the town and village to deal with this issue is to share information. North Hempstead Supervisor Judy Bosworth says setting up illegal apartments in a home is simply unsafe.

"There's nothing worse than a [firefighter] going into a house and encountering partitions that they didn't know were there, locked doors and other obstacles," said Bosworth.

Anyone that suspects a home has been illegally converted can call Westbury's code enforcement hotline at 516-333-1869 or the town's 311 call center.
