West Islip school authorities are trying to figure out what went wrong after a 9-year-old boy was left on a bus in the cold for more than two hours Thursday.
Ann Salamone says her son Robert, who attends Bayview Elementary School, never got off the bus when her older son went to get him. She says the bus picked him up around 3 p.m. from the school and was found more than two hours later, cold and alone a few miles from the school at the bus depot.
The bus driver and his assistant has been suspended with pay while the district investigates. After a meeting with the superintendent, the mother and grandmother say they?re satisfied with how the district is handing the situation.
Salamone says she wants cameras installed on the school buses to ensure something similar does not happen again.
The board of education will meet next week to decide if the driver will face any repercussions. School officials say the driver has been with the district for 10 years with no complaints.
