A 15-year-old from West Hempstead is sharing how his service dog is helping him navigate everyday challenges that aren’t always visible to others.

Cameron Bica received his second service dog from Canine Companions in February, on his birthday. His dog, Jona, helps him with everyday tasks and provides companionship and comfort. “I scratched his back and he scratched mine. It’s that companionship, the best relationship that anyone can have,” Cameron said.

Cameron stays active with the Boy Scouts, martial arts and a youth aviation program. But he says people don’t always see the challenges he faces. “I do admit I look like a normal kid, but inside, you never know what’s going on,” he said. Cameron lives with ADHD, anxiety, and a rare condition that can affect his breathing. His disabilities aren’t always apparent to others. Jona helps Cameron by picking up his keys, retrieving his medicine, and turning lights on and off. He also helps Cameron feel more comfortable during doctor’s visits.

Cameron’s mom, Kristy, says seeing the difference Jona has made in her son’s life has been emotional. “As a mom I can cry because I have seen my kid go up and down on a roller coaster, but when they have a four-legged friend that can make them feel so confidently, it’s amazing,” she said.

Canine Companions trains service dogs to help people with disabilities live more independently. The organization provides its service dogs to recipients at no cost. “They’re not pets. They’re not therapy dogs. They’re not emotional support dogs. They are trained basically in the same category as medical equipment,” said Paige Mazzoni, CEO of Canine Companions.

During Invisible Disabilities Week, Cameron’s story highlights how conditions that aren’t always visible can affect daily life, and how the right support can make a difference. For Cameron, Jona is more than a service dog. He’s a helper, a companion, and a trusted friend.
