A Long Island middle school has banned children from playing with hard balls during recess.
The Port Washington School District banned all hard balls from recess at Weber Middle School, saying that too many students were getting hurt. Now, students can only play with Nerf balls.
The school has also banned cartwheels and rough games of tag. Officials say anything that could lead to injuries is not allowed.
In a statement, the school blamed the ban on construction, saying, "Because of the construction project, there is limited space for the students. It is not safe for them to be engaged in unstructured play with hardballs. Absent the confined space, such restrictions would not be necessary."
