Parents for Megan's Law warned single mothers using online dating services Wednesday to beware of sexual predators in search of their children.
Michael Bradley, a Mastic Beach man convicted of sodomizing a 15-year-old boy, allegedly had a profile on Match.com, in violation of his parole, that said he is an auto repairman seeking kind-hearted companionship. Parents for Megan's Law said he was really looking for more young victims. That group and the Crime Victims Center reported Bradley to probation.
Parents for Megan's Law then went one step further and e-mailed him.
"We told him we had two boys, 7 and 12 years old," Laura Ahearn, of Parents for Megan's Law, said. Ahearn said Bradley took the bait and "e-mails us phone numbers and asks to meet for coffee or ice cream."
Ahearn said True.com is the only online dating service that performs criminal background checks on their subscribers. Match.com did not respond to requests for comment on this story.
Ahearn advised caution when setting up profiles online. Ahearn said to set up a separate e-mail account without using one's full name. Never give too much personal information or post children's pictures, she said. Ahearn also recommended checking the national sex offender registry before meeting up with anyone met online.
