The family of a former Ardsley resident missing in the Miami area condominium collapse met with President Joe Biden Friday during his visit to the site.
Rachel Spiegel says she and her family were reassured that the mission continues and that every effort is being made to find her mom, Judy, in Surfside, Florida.
Biden first addressed the families and survivors as a group and spoke very personally and deeply about his experience with loss and tragedy, according to Rachel.
He lost his first wife and baby girl in a car accident and later his adult son, Beau Biden, to brain cancer.
Rachel, a former Long Islander, says he and first lady Jill Biden held her hand and embraced her whole family with warmth and compassion and reassured them that everyone is committed to finding the missing.
"This is just unfathomable to me, but seeing the president today meant that all resources are on deck. We are not giving up as a nation, we're not giving up as a community ... I am just praying that we're going to find my mom because that is my mission. I am not giving up and I am not stopping until I find my mom," Rachel said.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology, which sent a team of scientists and engineers to the site, launched an investigation.
The Spiegel family has created a fund as well as two philanthropic efforts Judy is passionate about -- STEM education and Holocaust awareness.
Biden announced the federal government will be paying 100% of the search-and-rescue costs, including debris removal, for 30 days.
