A water quality advisory has been issued as a precaution for private well owners in sections of Mastic and Shirley.
The advisory comes following the detection of a certain level of chemicals that could be harmful.
Health officials will be sampling private wells in the areas south of the Brookhaven Calabro Airport, east of the Carmans River, west of the Forge River and north of Tipton Dirve and Poospatuck Creek. The sampling will be at no cost to residents.
The Suffolk County Department of Health Services will reach out to around 57 properties to sample their wells.
Anyone in the area that has a private well is urged to contact the Suffolk County Department of Health Services at 631-852-5810.
