Service has been restored on the Long Island Rail Road's (LIRR) West Hempstead branch after a water main break forced the LIRR to temporarily suspend service Thursday.
Officials say the water main ruptured at Hempstead Garden Drive and Chestnut Street in West Hempstead. The break occurred shortly before 5 a.m. and flooded the streets and the Hempstead Gardens train station. Police were forced to shut off power at the station and suspend service for four hours.
Homes within a two-mile radius of the break were also affected. Many homeowners say they had low water pressure and brown water. Water officials say those problems will probably last throughout the day while crews continue to repair the 12-inch break in the feeder main. The West Hempstead Water District says the brown water is strictly aesthetic and not contaminated. The district adds the 50-year-old water main broke due to the changes in temperature.
