As warmer weather settles in on the Island, fire officials are warning of the risk of brushfires.
The National Weather Service's Jeffery Tongue cautions carelessness on the part of residents often leads to brushfires.
"Residents need to be careful," Tongue said. "Any type of lit cigarette, certainly don't just toss it out the window."
Chief Warren Horst, the Suffolk County Fire Marshall, explained how hotter temperatures add to the risk.
"Sometimes it's almost explosive, particularly if you had a long period of dry weather, low humidity," Horst said.
Suffolk County fire departments are trained and adequately equipped to handle off-road brushfires in wooded areas, Horst said, as opposed to waiting for flames to spread to the roadside.
Despite the departments' capabilities, Horst reiterated many brushfires are still preventable. Related Information:Brush Fire Safety
