Hundreds gathered at the Pennysaver Amphitheater Saturday to take a stand against the opioid epidemic spreading across Long Island.

The “War on Addiction” rally brought together a massive group of people who’ve been affected by the deadly drug crisis, including people who have lost loved ones as well as those currently struggling with opioid addiction.

Organizers say the goal of the event is to raise awareness and fundraise for prevention, treatment and recovery efforts. They also collected signatures for a petition asking Gov. Andrew Cuomo to require substance abuse education in all New York schools for grades K-12.

The rally was held in honor of Billy Reitzig, of Miller Place. The 25-year-old died two years ago after overdosing on heroin. His father says he is now dedicated to preventing the same thing from happening to others and their loved ones.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Hope House Ministries, a Port Jefferson-based drug treatment center.
