A World War II veteran from Wantagh today received a long-overdue honor for his bravery in battle 70 years ago.
Len Stern was awarded the Purple Heart for his actions as a young man, when he fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
Records had been lost that proved Stern's accounts of how he was captured by Germans, rescued by Americans and then sent back to battle. The records were recovered by Stern's son, David.
Stern was awarded the medal by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
About 19,000 U.S. soldiers were killed in the Battle of the Bulge, which is considered the largest and bloodiest fought by the U.S. during the war.
