A Long Island first responder says he?s convinced his work at Ground Zero will kill him.
One day after a death was linked for the first time to toxic air as a result of the terrorist attack, Wantagh?s Bob Gayer says he has had chronic health problems since he spent four days helping at Ground Zero. A New Jersey coroner said Tuesday that NYPD Detective James Zadroga died of pulmonary disease and respiratory failure directly related to the 9/11 incident. Nassau University Medical Center doctors say it is just the tip of the iceberg.
Dr. Ken Steier, who works at the hospital on a study monitoring 800 Ground Zero responders, says others have almost certainly died because of the toxic air and many more will. He says the full damage of the attacks will not be known for 15 to 20 years.
