W. Islip day care center evacuated as fire breaks out

Flames erupted near a West Islip day care center today, prompting the evacuation of more than 100 young children.The fire broke out next door to Tutor Time on Sunrise Highway this morning, officials say.

Flames erupted near a West Islip day care center today, prompting the evacuation of more than 100 young children.The fire broke out next door to Tutor Time on Sunrise Highway this morning, officials say. The owners evacuated all of the children, including some babies in cribs, and took them to a nearby car dealership. The day care center was evacuated for approximately two hours. Fire officials say the blaze appears to have been started by workers who were using a torch on the roof of the building next door.
