A group of volunteers restored the gravestone of a Long Islander who played a key role in the American Revolution.
The group resurrected the gravestone of Jonas Hawkins, who was a member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. Hawkins is buried at Mills Pond Cemetery.
Richard Smith, the Smithtown town historian, says Hawkins played a key role in the spy ring.
Hawkins died in 1817. His once-neglected gravestone is now restored and has been chemically treated so it will turn white over the next few months.
The work of volunteers shines a light on Hawkin’s life, legacy, and memory etched in marble.
