Volunteers providing Thanksgiving food for Sandy victims
More than 1,000 Long Island families who are struggling after Superstorm Sandy are getting free items for their Thanksgiving meals this holiday.
Hundreds of volunteers from the United Jewish Appeal Federation are dropping off baskets to the families, who are all clients of a nonprofit group that's helping Sandy victims.
The Scaturro family, of Lindenhurst, is among the recipients of a basket of Thanksgiving goodies. The entire bottom floor of their home was flooded when the storm hit last year, and they've been living in a bedroom upstairs ever since.
It's especially difficult because the Scaturros also have a special needs child. They say they're very grateful for the basket of nonperishable items they received, along with a gift card for a free turkey.
