With powerful earthquakes still rattling Puerto Rico, volunteers from New York are there to help with the ongoing recovery efforts.
Although some have felt the aftershocks and tremors in the Puerto Rican capital of San Juan, for the most part, it is business as usual. There is still electricity, and the hotels and streets are flooded with tourists there with not much visible damage. San Juan is filled with a different presence - with people coming to the aid of Puerto Ricans in the southern part of the island most affected. Many of them are using San Juan as a base, including NYC Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Deanne Criswell who landed in San Jan Monday.
The commissioner says there are 28 people on the ground - the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Department of Buildings, NYC Emergency Management, as well as NYPD. She says they are primarily supporting logistical operations and working with communities to help move supplies as needed but primarily one of the things they are doing with the Department of Buildings is building inspections, which they are in great need of. She says they have done nearly 1,500.
For the next few days, News 12 will continue to follow some of those workers volunteers and organizations in Puerto Rico trying to do their best to help those still fearing for their lives living in tents hoping that their homes won’t collapse.
