Volunteers build boats at LI Maritime Museum

Volunteers spend their Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout the year building classic wooden boats at the Frank F. Penny boat shop on the grounds of the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville.
"We tell jokes, we drink coffee, we go here, there and everywhere and we build a boat," says master boat builder Marty Sievers.
The boats are then raffled off, with the money raised going toward the museum.
Sievers for 25 years has shared his knowledge with volunteers.
"I have had guys who couldn't turn a screw into a piece of wood, and they learned how and they told me how much they enjoyed it," he says.
The crew is currently building a boat called "The Defender." It's a vintage yacht tender modeled after a boat from the 1890s.
"The Defender" is expected to be finished this summer and will be raffled off in the fall.
