An auxiliary police officer from Valley Stream is dead after he and two other men were gunned down in Greenwich Village.
Police say the incident began around 9 p.m. Wednesday when 32-year-old David Gavin walked into a pizza restaurant and asked 35-year-old Alfredo Romaro for a menu. They say Gavin then shot him in the back 15 times.
Cops say 19-year-old Eugene Marshalik, of Valley Stream, and Nicholas Todd Pekearo responded to the shooting and attempted to approach Gavin. They say Gavin crossed the street and fatally shot the two unarmed volunteer officers. New York City police officers then exchanged gunfire with Gavin and fatally shot him. Police found two guns and 100 rounds of ammunition on Gavin.
Marshalik was a student at New York University who had emigrated from Russia. Family members say he had hoped to go to law school and eventually become a prosecutor.
