Family and friends of a slain Ecuadorian immigrant held a ceremony in Patchogue Saturday commemorating the one-year anniversary of his murder.
The relatives of Marcelo Lucero organized a vigil at the site of his murder and then headed to Congregational Church of Patchogue on East Main Street, where his funeral was held, for a candlelight service.
Police say 37-year-old Marcelo Lucero was stabbed to death by seven teens who apparently targeted him for being a foreigner.
Lucero?s death sparked outrage across the nation, and now the Justice Department and the U.S. attorney's office are investigating the Suffolk Police Department, which had been accused of mishandling hate crimes.
