Students and faculty paid tribute to veterans during their Flag Day celebration Friday at Commack Road Elementary School in Islip.
Among those honored was Alfred DiGiamoco, a 95-year-old Army Air Force veteran who designed the school when it was built 50 years ago.
His daughter, Kathleen Shanahan, is a teacher at the school.
School officials say it's important for the children to remember the men and women who fought to preserve freedom in the United States.
"It's a good country, because we have freedom and many countries don't have that," says student Mia Byrnes.
