Bitter cold is the main concern for Long Island early this morning. Even as winds slowly ease, temperatures in the single digits and teens are combining with the breeze to create dangerous wind chills. Feels-like temperatures are as low as -10 near the coast and down to -15 farther inland, making it unsafe to stay outside for long periods. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m., so residents should bundle up and limit outdoor exposure.
Another weather system could bring light snow or a wintry mix to Long Island late Tuesday into Tuesday night. Most areas, if they see anything at all, will get light precipitation. Coastal and southern parts of Long Island may see a mix of snow, sleet, or even light rain as temperatures briefly rise ahead of a cold front. Snow amounts look minor, but eastern Long Island could see up to around an inch, while western sections may see little or no accumulation.
Temperatures will stay below normal through the end of the week, though not as brutally cold as recent days. Wednesday will turn colder again behind a cold front, with gusty northwest winds up to 25 mph. Highs most days will be in the low to mid-30s, with overnight lows in the teens inland and low 20s near the coast. The coldest stretch looks to be Thursday and Friday, running about 5 to 8 below average.
Looking ahead, there is a chance of rain or snow late next weekend into early next week, but confidence is low right now. Forecast models are still showing a wide range of possibilities, and the exact storm track will matter a lot. With only marginal cold air in place, any system could bring different impacts to Long Island, so updates later this week will be important to watch.
