A Long Island man was critically injured in a multi-vehicle crash that sparked a massive fuel tanker explosion in New Jersey on Saturday, and another man was killed in the crash.
The accident happened shortly after 1 p.m. on Interstate 78 in the area of Union Township, New Jersey. Investigators say an Audi crossed into the path of the fuel tanker, which was carrying up to 9,000 gallons of fuel. The tanker and the Audi then crossed into the highway's express lanes, colliding with a tractor-trailer. The tanker erupted in massive flames after the crash.
The Audi driver was killed in the crash. He has been identified as 24-year-old James Pinaire, of Chatham, New Jersey.
The fuel tank driver, identified as Balwinder Singh, of Valley Stream, was able to escape from his burning vehicle. He has been hospitalized in critical condition.
Viewer photos and videos sent into News 12 Long Island's sister station, News 12 New Jersey, showed that the smoke and flames from the tanker fire could be seen for miles. The crash snarled traffic in the area for much of the day.
