A Dix Hills home that has been called a neighborhood eyesore has gone up in flames.
The blaze broke out at around 6 a.m. Sunday at 4 Carriage Court.
Residents in the area say the home has been abandoned and vacant for eight years. As previously reported, the property had been labeled as blighted by the Town of Huntington.
The house is owned by Nicholas Donofrio, a pastor at the Upper Room Ministries in Dix Hills. Donofrio could not be reached for comment.
Fire officials have deemed the fire suspicious and it is now being investigated by the Suffolk County Police Arson Squad.
Residents who spoke with News 12 say they were actually happy about news of the home's burning.
"I'm jumping for joy," said Porzia DiGiorgio, of Dix Hills. "This house has been such a terrible mark on our street."
A Huntington town spokesperson said in a statement, "The fire marshall has placarded the building and will be sending a notice to the owner that is has to be boarded up and secured... The town will be assessing what effect the fire has on the blight proceeding."
Neighbors say that Donofrio has not yet boarded up and secured the home. His attorney was also contacted for comment, but News 12 has not heard back.
