A KeySpan worker contracted to a job for the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is dead after being electrocuted in Lido Beach Wednesday.
Officials say three utility workers were energizing a transformer in a Town of Hempstead park when an electrical box blew a fuse. Malverne resident Joseph Ingenito, 55, climbed underneath the street to find out what went wrong and was hit with more than 7,000 volts of electricity. He was rushed to Long Beach Hospital, but was pronounced dead within a half hour.
Nassau homicide detectives say the worker was wearing the required rubber gloves, boots and sleeves, but that the amount of electricity was just too much. LIPA chairman Richard Kessel says the incident goes to show the danger utility workers face every day.
