Two workers at the PLUS Group Home face charges of harassment and endangering an incompetent person for allegedly abusing one of the home?s residents, Nassau police say.
Nelly Gedeon, a 20-year-old from Uniondale, was caught on tape hitting the woman in the head with a shoe, police say. Johny Djhon-Felix, 33, hit the victim, grabbed her hair, and shook her, police say.
The victim is severely autistic and cannot speak or express emotion or pain, according to police. They said they were contacted by other workers who suspected something was going on.
One of the suspicious workers had placed a video camera in an air conditioning vent. The camera captured four separate events of abuse on the victim.
?Their job is to provide care and housing for developmentally-challenged people, and here they are abusing them,? Det. Sgt. Michael Williams said, adding that the people who taped and brought the evidence to the first precinct did a great job.
Police are still looking for two additional workers who may have played a part in the abuse. One allegedly kicked the woman and hit her with a wooden clothes hanger.
The executive director of PLUS Group Homes said in a phone interview that ?safety comes first.? She says they were suspicious that there could have been some abuse, and they were determined to identify anyone who could have been taking part.
She would not say if people have to pass any type of background checks to work in the home.
