Union members delivered Christmas coal Sunday to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, responding to his alternate plan for the old Cerro Wire property.
Developer Taubman Centers has fought to build a mall on the land for more than a decade, but local residents have repeatedly sued in an effort to stop its construction. In an effort to circumvent the courts and address a growing problem, Venditto proposes to build housing. Even though the workers union would build either project, Nassau-Suffolk Building Trades is in favor of the mall. They say it presents an opportunity for work on the property after the initial job.
While residents applaud Venditto's efforts, a Taubman Centers representative says the company will continue to pursue a mall.
