Construction is officially underway on a new $2 million spray park planned for Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood.

Roberto Clemente Park was the site of an illegal dumping scandal and was closed for several years as a result.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and other elected officials were at the groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday.

Amid the celebration came unanswered questions. The supervisor would not commit on an opening date for the new spray park. She said the town hopes to have it ready to go by next summer, but did not say if that means the beginning, middle or the end of the season.

There have also been problems reopening a kiddie pool in the park, which the town had promised would be ready by this summer. That timeline was pushed back because of structural issues with the pool's walls.

Even so, Supervisor Carpenter says the swimming pool will be open this year, but could not say exactly when.

“We are very, very hopeful it will be open this summer. With the grace of God, it will be sooner rather than later,” she said.

Town officials say tile work and paving still needs to be completed before the pool can reopen.
