The Yaphank Correctional Department welcomed its newest K-9 member on Wednesday.
K-9 Sato received his sheriff's office shield.
The 2-year-old German shepherd, who was born in the Czech Republic, will assist with searches of housing units, mail and packages – and will patrols during visiting hours.
"His presence serves as both a deterrent and a tool to enhance both the safety and security of all facilities," explained Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr.
Sato is one of three new K-9s who joined the unit that protects county jails.
A fourth dog will join the unit this summer, thanks to a grant from the ASPCA.
