Two Taco Bells in Nassau have reopened Tuesday after being forced to shutdown due to an E. coli outbreak.
Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi confirmed at a news conference that Taco Bells in East Meadow and Hempstead are now open. Both the Hicksville and Garden City Taco Bells remain closed along with four others in Suffolk. The closures were prompted after 11 people in Suffolk County and three people in Nassau fell ill from E. coli, including one child who has been in the hospital for about a week. Suozzi also announced there may be one more possible case of E. coli involving a person who ate at a Seaford Taco Bell.
In addition to the outbreak on Long Island, more than 20 people in New Jersey fell ill from E. coli. New Jersey health officials are examining a number of restaurants in that state. Symptoms include high fever, diarrhea and severe cramping and could take up to eight days to appear. Anyone who has recently eaten at a Taco Bell should keep an eye out for E. coli symptoms.
