? Police in Southampton are trying to unravel the events that led to a pickup truck plunging into the ocean surf on a beach Monday afternoon.

Police say they were alerted to the situation by a phone call from a resident around 3 p.m. Two officers arrived on the scene and found the pickup truck in the surf on the beach. They quickly jumped in the water and pulled out the driver, 54-year-old Brian Harrington, but he was later pronounced dead on arrival.

Investigators aren?t sure if Harrington was dead before the truck went into the water or if he died after. The powerful waves could be seen tossing the truck around in the rough surf.

The two officers who jumped in the water were taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia.
