(09/19/06) MINEOLA - The first state trooper on the scene testified Tuesday in the trial of Martin Heidgen, the man accused of killing two people while driving intoxicated in the wrong direction of the Meadowbrook Parkway in July of 2005.
State Trooper Michael Harris says Heidgen admitted after the accident that he was in self-destruct mode. Harris testified that Heidgen told him he began drinking after work in Manhattan, and then took the train home. Shortly after getting into a fight with an ex-girlfriend, Heidgen reportedly told Harris that he drank a fifth of scotch and drove while upset and depressed. Harris says Heidgen was under the impression he had hit a tree or median before being informed that he had killed two people.
Katie Flynn, a 7-year-old who had just served as flower girl in a family wedding, and Stanley Rabinowitz, the limo driver, were killed in the accident.
