Testimony continued Monday in the trial of a Lynbrook man accused of driving while high, crashing into another car and killing two people.
Prosecutors say John Aniano, 27, crashed into another car on Sunrise Highway back in January of 2015. John Jones and Sharon Long, who had lived together in Lynbrook for 20 years, were both killed.
Aniano faces vehicular homicide and manslaughter charges.
An eyewitness who took the stand Monday described hearing "an engine roaring like a race car coming towards me" and says she "saw swerving."
An emergency room nurse also testified that Aniano was "very resistant and vulgar" after the crash.
Relatives of both Aniano and the victims sat on opposite sides of the courtroom. Relatives say Jones and Long were a compassionate couple who often did favors for elderly people in need.
Aniano's father says his son has bipolar disorder and issues with medication may have impacted the events of that night. He says the crash was an accident and his son is remorseful.
John Jones' sister says she wants justice for her brother and sister-in-law. She says her only comfort is that they were together when they passed.
"If after this accident one of them survived and the other one didn't, they wouldn't want to live," she says.
