Police say tragic circumstances caused an hour-long Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service interruption during the evening commute Friday.
According to police, the 4:24 p.m. eastbound train out of Penn Station came to a screeching halt at the front of the Bethpage station platform at Stewart Avenue. LIRR officials originally asked passengers to exit the train and use provided buses to continue their rush-hour travels, but allowed commuters to get back on board about 45 minutes later. LIRR warned of residual operating delays, but most commuters did not report any problems after the initial stoppage.
Officials report a teenage girl died at the Bethpage station in an apparent suicide. Her identity has not been released.
