Only one lane will be open in both directions on Lido Boulevard until Friday, according to the Nassau County Traffic Management office.
The traffic issues in Long Beach are due to a sinkhole that opened up on Wednesday.
Nassau County officials say construction crews are dealing with water and sewage backup.
The sinkhole has already been causing major backups and drivers are being encouraged to use alternative routes.
“It’s just bad trying to get around, trying to get around this to like going home” says Matt Rappa, of Long Beach. “I usually got this way and I’ll figure out a different way. It takes way longer. It adds 20+ minutes on the drive home.”
The Point Lookout Fire Department has also had to relocate because of the work being done to fix the sinkhole.
Point Lookout Fire Chief Bill Wade says being displaced should not affect respond times.
Wade says he met with county officials about the situation, and says the timeline is now two to three weeks.
“I don’t know if it’s gonna be short, I don’t believe so or whether it’s going to be longer,” Wade says.
Crews are also inspecting other parts of Lido Boulevard for potential structural issues.
