Thousands of children's coloring kits imported from China were recalled Thursday because they contain hazardous levels of lead, Toys "R" Us and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday.
Most prominent among the recalled items is the Imaginarium Wooden coloring case, which is sold exclusively at Toys "R" Us. The product contains dangerous levels of lead in both the black watercolor paint inside and within the paint on the case, the government said. The coloring case was manufactured in China.
Thursday's announcement is the latest in a recent string of Chinese-made product recalls. Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us pulled thousands of infant bibs from their shelves earlier in August for potentially high lead levels, and Mattel has recalled upwards of 19 million toys produced in China since July for the same reason.
Long Island parents said they are very worried about their children's safety.
"It really makes you want to gather everything up and say, 'You can't play with any of this,'" said parent Caryn Siegelson.
East Northport resident Tricia Mortensen agreed, saying, "I think it's pretty sad that they don't check on those things to make sure everything's gonna be alright for our kids. It's dangerous."
