Charities on Long Island are appealing for toy donations, saying that demand is way up while the amount of collected toys so far has not met the mark.
John Theissen, founder of John Theissen Children's Foundation, says toy donations are down by 40%. He is hoping to provide presents to children in shelters and hospitals who requested his services this holiday season.
"Last year we had over 300 boxes out there. This year we have 120," he told News 12, saying he might not have the capacity to fill the demand.
"We have a storage container that was emptied and filled already, but normally it would have been like three or four times by now.”
Theresa Guevara has been coming to pick up toys for her family for three years at the foundation. She says it’s sad to see that donations have been dwindling amid the pandemic.
"It's sad because I know that means a lot of people are going to miss out…I know that it’s a very difficult time this year. A lot of families are going through a lot,” she says.
Those who would like to make a donation can do so on JTCF website.
