New York residents violating the state’s social distancing protocols could face a fine of up to $1,000.
Long Island town supervisors say they are stepping up enforcement of the state's mandate.
Public safety officials will patrol parks, beaches, playgrounds and neighborhoods to make sure there are no groups larger than 10 and that people are staying 6 feet apart.
"If you don't understand that this is a deadly, serious situation we're in, then you deserve to get a summons,” says Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.
Town supervisors who spoke with News 12 say they have done all that they can to enforce social distancing. They have shut down the amenities at many parks, and in some cases, closed the parks all together.
Some supervisors say they don't plan to keep any of the money collected from the fines. They have requested the money be put into a state fund for first responders and health care workers.
