Environmental officials are visiting Canada geese habitats across Long Island in an effort to control the species? growing population.
Officials in the Town of Oyster Bay say egg oiling is the main method of control Eggs less than two weeks old are marked and covered with corn oil, which officials say prevents oxygen from getting to the egg. They say the mother will still sit on her eggs, but they will never become babies. Another method is using two boarder collies to scare off the geese for a few hours. Experts say the geese view the dog as a predator.
The Nature Conservancy and the Audubon Society say these methods are the most humane ways of dealing with the problem.
