The Town of Oyster Bay is pitted in a development battle over a vacant lot along the Long Island Expressway.

The Town of Oyster Bay currently owns the plot, located just north of the expressway between exits 42 and 43 in Syosset. On Tuesday, Aug. 20, residents will vote on whether the land should be sold to three organizations, one of which is Simon Properties.

However, the area adjacent to the plot is owned by Taubman Centers, which has been fighting for years to build a mall of its own. Taubman apparently offered to pay much more than $30 million for the town land, but local officials ignored the deal.

Meanwhile, Todd Fabricant, with the group Cerro Wire Coalition, says the land should be used for senior housing and office space. He says Simon Properties will not build a mall because it would hurt business at their other properties - the Roosevelt Field and Walt Whitman malls.
