Town of Hempstead officials want to give themselves pay hikes.

The Hempstead Town Board is considering raising Supervisor Kate Murray's salary from $150,000 per year to $160,000. Under the proposal, town council members would go from earning $66,000 per year to $71,000 per year. The receiver of taxes would get a bump up to $130,000 per year, and the communications director would get a $6,000 raise.

In a statement, the town communications director pointed out that the supervisor and town board members haven't had a salary increase since early 2010, so these raises amount to less than 2 percent more per year.
