Tom Suozzi's hold on the county executive position in Nassau County is hanging by a thread.
The incumbent Democrat has a 237-vote lead over Republican challenger Ed Mangano and more than 7,000 paper ballots have yet to be counted.
The county executive has ordered a recount and officials are already checking and rechecking the voting machines. An actual recount won?t begin until next week.
Suozzi said Democrats were clearly overconfident and that he was surprised by the numbers. He said being ahead by a couple of hundred votes is better than being behind.
Mangano praised his party's showing on Election Day and said Nassau residents loudly said they wanted change. Mangano said he is confident he will be declared the victor.
