Model trains, a petting zoo and a tree-decorating contest helped the Village of Stony Brook ring in the holidays today.

The village held its 34th annual Holiday Festival on Sunday.

Attendees were treated to a visit from the Ward Melville Heritage Organization's theater troop, who told the true tale of the Christmas of 1814, when Stony Brook's harbor froze and deliveries of presents almost didn't make it in time for the holiday.

One of the most colorful parts of the festival was the Promenade of Trees, featuring Christmas trees decorated by different organizations. Girl Scout Troop 1841 used painted pine cones for their 4-foot tree.

The winner of the tree contest wins $250 to spend in the village. People can vote for their favorite tree by casting their ballot at different shops in the Village of Stony Brook.
