Nearly 90,000 people connected to Stony Brook University are at risk for identity theft.
The names and Social Security numbers of students, faculty, staff and alumni were mistakenly posted on the Internet. The school says the information was inadvertently made public when a university Web site was being reconfigured. A spokesman for Stony Brook says the information was available for a couple of weeks before it was taken down.
University officials say only a few people accessed the database since the information was posted, but they're encouraging everyone to sign up for credit monitoring just to be safe. Related Information Data Disclosure: Frequently Asked Questions
