Thief grabs painkillers from CVS on Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park
Police say a man stole handfuls of prescription painkillers from a Suffolk drug store last night, and they believe it may not have been the first time the suspect pulled off a pill theft.
Police have released surveillance photos of the man who grabbed pain pills from a CVS on Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park yesterday. They say that back on Sept. 22, a similar looking man believed to be in his 20s jumped over the counter in the same store, grabbed the pharmacists and stole pain medication.
Long Island drug counselors say it's the latest in a string of pharmacy thefts that may be springing up because of the new iStop law. The legislation set up a computer database that makes it easier for pharmacists and doctors to tell if people are loading up on excess pills.
Nyyar Imam, a pharmacist, says he turns away addicts every day who are red-flagged in the new iStop system. He says he's concerned about addicts turning to violence against pharmacists to get the drugs and adds that there needs to be more treatment for those in need.
A $5,000 reward is being offered in the Deer Park robbery. Anyone with information is urged to call Suffolk Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
