The experts at Consumer Reports tell us what you really want to look at is the usable cooking surface of the grill. They say to buy as big as you will ordinarily use.

Paul, from Consumer Reports, says you should look for helpful features like an electronic ignition on a gas grill, and also look for a long warranty. Grills that tend to be built to last very often have a 10 year warranty. Also check online stores for specials and free delivery.

He also suggests passing on gimmicky features. "In the past we've seen a handful of Wi-Fi connected grills. Generally speaking they are pretty expensive for something that is often left out in the rain."

While you can buy a good charcoal grill for $90 and a gas one for about $200, the latest craze are grills that burn flavored pellets made of compressed sawdust and wood shavings. These cost between $500 and $2,000.
