It's a place where spring is
king.
News 12’s Doug Geed takes us to an East End greenhouse operation where
right now is their busiest time of year.
Between the arrival of spring, Easter and with Mother’s Day not far off, the
demand for flowers is huge.
Kurt Weiss Greenhouses has
been meeting the demand for decades.
“Overall we have between 9 and 10 million square feet. That makes us one of the largest greenhouse producers in
the United States,” says Wayne Weiss.
The operation has 60 acres of greenhouses at their Center Moriches
headquarters alone -- churning out traditional spring favorites including
tulips and hydrangeas.
What they grow in Center Moriches is packed up and shipped out and
trucked to box stores, supermarkets, garden centers and florists.
The fifth generation of the Weiss family is now involved in the business and
it's certainly come a long way from when they were delivering flowers by
horse-drawn carriage.
An automated planter is among the newest additions.
“It can plant three different species into one particular cell and make a
combination liner,” says Weiss.
